Do You Know What Has Happened to You?

How badly do you want what you want?

I talk a lot about identity. I am so particular about it because I think it is important.

Sometimes, you find out that it is easier to fantasize and daydream about being someone or something else. It is easier not being YOU.

Why is it easier?

Because then you do not have to deal with the shit and all the baggage that comes with being you.

Things happen to us. Those things change who we are. Events in our lives force us to reevaluate most things, if not everything we think we know about ourselves and about other things/other people.

The knowledge of who you are helps you pick your fights. We all talk about our hopes and dreams, but in most cases, they just end up being just talks.

No influence. No drive. Nothing.

Do you know what’s happened to you?

There is no way you would be able to answer this question if you don’t know who you are.

If you do not acknowledge what has happened to you.

Now, this is more predominant in Africa than it is in every part of the world. When bad things happen to you, you are told to do all you can to get it off your mind. You are encouraged to keep only the good stuff in.

But can we be wholly who we are without the bad stuff that’s happened to us? Pain is a part of life. It is at its core. It is part of what makes life what it is.

Do you want to live this way?

You will be doing yourself a great disservice if you decide to leave your life to chance.

I am not trying to override the place of F.A.T.E in each of our lives. Sometimes, life randomly throws things at you.

And when this happens, you can’t control the cards you are dealt, but you can control how you respond to them.

You can control your circumstances. Why don’t you do that?

Can you be kinder?

Can you decide to take care of yourself more?

Literally, I am saying your experience should be all that matters to you.

Whichever you decide to do.

Is it the best you can be?
