Often times people argue that it is more important to be useful than to be known. I personally think it’s a silly argument. How can one be useful if you are not known?
Let me try to explain…
The Christians believe that Jesus is the son of God, who came to the earth, died for our sins and set us free right? So His death is useful to us because now, we are free.
How did we get to believe in his death?
We were taught about Jesus, we read about him, some people even claim to have experienced Jesus supernaturally appear to them. Whatever made you believe, the point is that you got to know Jesus one way or the other, and then you believed.
We call Jesus the son of God because that is whom he told us he is.
If you never say your name out loud to anyone, they would never call you by it.
Offred’s relations with Nick never became real and tangible until she told him her name.
The handmaids never recognized how powerful they were until they said their names and not the names Gilead gave them.
The tragedy of Ofglen’s departure was compounded when Offred realized she didn’t know her name.
“do you know Ofglen’s name?” – she asked.
“she was your shopping partner” – another handmaid replied.
“we never got that far.”
But how could you go far with someone whose name you don’t even know? Could you ever remember them when they are gone?
In a world where being true to yourself is a triumph and sharing a secret can be deadly, I am most glad June shared this piece of herself.
It is only natural to have gone through a strange season of being unknown at least once in a lifetime, especially if you are introverted.
Perhaps, this is why this generation thrives so well in the anonymity of technology. Everyone hiding behind their screens.
It is safe. It is strange.
But for how long would you hide?
We were created to love and be loved. Go out there and do just that.
Say your name out loud. Be known. Be seen.
