‘Aunty, whose desk is this?’- Tee asked
‘Melvin sits there’- I quickly replied
He was about leaving when something screamed inside of me ‘address it!’
A few years back, I worked under a boss who preferred to call her subordinates ‘Madam/Oga’,
Instead of their first names (which is the organization’s policy).
This, didn’t sit well with me, I’d rather she called me Nkiru. I mean how difficult is that?
As I write this, I can’t help but wonder why I didn’t speak up?
Someone did something which made me uncomfortable, and I didn’t speak for eight (8) months?
So, as Tee was about leaving, I quickly called out – ‘Hello Tee, just a minute please, my name is Nkiru.
‘of course, I know your name’- he replied, visibly amused.
‘Good’, I said. I’d rather you addressed me by my name.
Stunned and a little bit confused, he said a weak ‘okay’ and quickly left the room.
Does it make you uncomfortable? Address it.
